Net Zero Plan

Complete Rehab Ltd and sustainability

Complete Rehab Ltd and it's therapists can make a difference and improve outcomes for people and planet by incorporating sustainable practice into their professional roles and evidencing the environmental, social and financial impact. These three impact areas form the basis of our action plan below.

It’s important that we act now to protect the future health of our people and planet with a commitment to greatly reduce emissions from the wealthiest and biggest polluting healthcare sectors.

We believe

  • We can all play a part in helping combat the impact of the climate emergency and reduce health inequalities.

  • The current use of resources is not sustainable without compromising the wellbeing of future generations.

  • Our ability, and that of the people we work with, to take part in meaningful occupations, have access to the places that matter to us and be satisfied with our occupational wellbeing are being affected by the climate crisis.

  • Sustainability and a fair approach to facilitating occupational wellbeing should go hand in hand.

We are committed to

  • embedding sustainability into our business activities

  • enabling our members to understand and embed sustainability while delivering high quality, evidenced based care to the people they're working with

  • being an ethical and sustainably responsible business.

We recognise the critical importance of sustainability as a key part of prioritising the occupational wellbeing of the people we work with. This is reflected in our Professional Standards. This means we’re committed to ensuring it’s embedded within the healthcare profession.

When developing our actions and guidance we have looked across our profession.

At Complete Rehab we are committed to embedding sustainability in everything we do. From the RCOT first pulse survey on environmental sustainability late last year, which highlighted the need for the profession to drive change further across the sustainability agenda.

Of the 1,726 occupational therapists to respond to the RCOT survey, (95%) said we all have a role to play in reducing the negative impact our health and social care systems have on the planet. Just over half (55%) said that they felt able to take action as an occupational therapist to reduce environmental impact, while just under half (48%) said they feel able to influence other health and social care professionals to take similar actions.

What are we doing to make a difference?

We recognise the critical importance of sustainability and are committed to ensuring it’s driven across the occupational therapy profession.

Since conception our offices have used sustainable materials were possible or re-using existing materials and furniture and IT equipment from our parent complete or it's subsidiaries. We are also working towards being a paperless company and have reduced our paper wastage to almost 2%, aiming to reduce this further to 1% by late 2025.

We also donated surplus furniture to ethical business or via Freecycle. We also donate any electrical equipment to either an authorised waste management facility or donate via ethical charities.

Our head office has recently replaced an inefficient boiler system, we use low energy lighting and have no air conditioning which has resulted in improving our efficiency and reducing our carbon footprint. We also minimise any electrical wastage and ensure our IT equipment or electrical equipment is serviced regularly to ensure it remains efficient, we also utilise energy efficient rating equipment where possible.

Furthermore, to reduce travel and further impact of our carbon footprint, we encourage joint client visits, joint client meetings and utilise video conferencing to reduce travel.

Additionally, we have created secure bike storage in the head office to encourage employees to cycle to work. We also provide electric vehicles to help offset our carbon footprint.

As an organisation, we know we’ve got a responsibility to invest our charitable assets to help support the organisation and its financial status and future longevity and our general approach to sustainability includes supporting investments in companies and investment funds that demonstrate positive policies and practices, in line with our values.  We also look to adopt, where possible the UN Sustainable Development Goals as a positive framework for the investment of our charitable assets.
